Online Travel Agent Business - Recession Proof?

The Online Travel Agent Business and The Recession -

I'm a social person, and I like to mingle in the various social networking sites that are out there.

As a proud work at home mom, I love to go the the various wahm (work at home mom) sites.

The stories of these women are refreshing, and they are a constant reminder of the joy it brings to work at home, and to take care of your family.

If you had told me 3 years ago that I would be working a home based business, and home schooling my teenaged daughter, I would have laughed, HARD!

While I was reading comments on one of the sites I like to frequent, I came across a conversation that really shook me up.

I'll paraphrase to protect the original poster, and those who answered.

Anyone here in the online travel agent business?

Are there any work from home moms here that work as an online travel agent? How has the economy affected your business? I would like to get started into this business, but I don't have any prior experience In the travel industry, thanks.

Here are some of the well intended, but misinformed answers that this person received, and I was shocked that not one online travel agent had answered, and upset that I hadn't seen her message before now.

She was told that if she wasn't an already proven saleswoman, that the answer was no. She was also told that with the economy, people are NOT concerned with traveling.

I have to tell you that simply is NOT true. Yes, the economy is depressed to say the least. But to state that people are no longer traveling is just not the case.

As an advertising consultant for over 21 years, part of my job was to help business owners to see that in a recessed economy, they needed to advertise more, rather than cut back advertising as a way to save on business overhead. You'll understand this thought process a little better with this very over simplified example.

Here's how to look at the economy, and the travel industry.

This represents a very robust economy, and the different sectors of business would be pieces of this pie.

In a very robust economy, travel would look like a very healthy slice of the pie.

In a recession, the pie gets smaller, so that the economy goes from looking very robust to looking like this:

And the travel industry would look like this:

People are still traveling, for business, and for pleasure. But as the pie clearly shows, in a recession, the pie is smaller.

What this means in simple terms, is that when the economy is robust, there is plenty of business for everyone. Think about the recent turn in the Real Estate Market.

While the Real Estate market was booming, it wasn't difficult for rookie agents to make a six figure income, almost effortlessly. ( I was a real estate agent, so I'm speaking from experience.)

When the market turned, did it mean that people stopped purchasing homes?

Absolutely not! It just meant that the experienced, seasoned agents knew that they had to maintain or increase their level of activity, and advertising, in preparation for the eventuality that the market would once again soften.

And depending on who you speak with in the Real Estate market, times are tough, or business is booming.

When the market is soft, the piece of the real estate pie, or the travel pie is smaller, and requires a business person to be more competitive, have better customer service, talk to more people, pay for advertising, GET THE WORD OUT.

Success in a recession requires more work, more effort, and more advertising.

To say that people are no longer traveling or buying houses is incorrect.

Right now, I'm planning a three week tour of Europe for two very excited gals, who saved their money, and have no intention of letting the current economy deter their plans for a dream vacation.

History has shown us that the reason that Sears survived the great depression was because when faced with closing their doors, they advertised more, while their competition advertised less.

Who's still around? Well, glad to say that Sears is still with us. In fact, when the depression was over, Sears came out way ahead of the competition, because they had built customer loyalty, by remaining visible.

In order to survive in a recession, the online travel agent business model still works, after all, 85% of all travel is booked online, but who's going to get the business?

The online travel agent business that relies strictly on family, and friends, and little to no advertising?

Or the online travel agent who steps up to the challenge and remains visible by competing for the smaller piece of the pie?

In this economy, home based businesses are being opened at record speeds.

If you are doing your due diligence about whether a home travel business is right for you, know your facts. Travel has many factors that make it a plus in any economy.

TraVerus Scam! The Truth About TraVerus Travel

I decided to write this blog about the

Traverus Scam

because I wanted to clear up some misconceptions about Traverus and the notion that Traverus is a scam.

What I have found in my experience with Traverus is this: Success comes at a price, and that "price" is hard work.

If you're looking for information about Traverus and whether or not Traverus is a scam, I'm glad that you found my blog. I am a real person, and I work from home.

I am making money, and I love what I do.

I found Traverus by accident. Plain and simple. I had left Corporate America after watching a close friend and co-worker get cheated out of a $500,000 pension, lifetime health and retirement benefits one week prior to his retirement.

This is a man who started the company in the bloom of his youth, in fact when he started, he had no grey hair. When the company that I worked for fired him, he was completely grey.

What a wakeup call! I decided that I was not going to allow Corporate America to take one more minute away from me, my family, or my children. They would not take my YOUTH away, and leave me empty handed, when I needed them the most.

I could not imagine giving away any more than I already had, only to have the company that I had given my all to conspire to steal what was rightfully mine, only to replace me with someone younger, and willing to work for less.

I walked away from a six figure income and gained something so much more...MY LIFE.

There is a saying that goes something like this: When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

What exactly does that mean? It means that when the pain of staying exactly where you are is too great, you'll do something about it. You'll do whatever it takes to alleviate that pain.

Is it enough that you hate your job, or where you are at life? That question can only be answered by YOU.

The pain of staying where I was, and allowing myself to be used, manipulated and discarded when I was no longer of any value to a company was ENOUGH for me to say I'm done.

I'm free, and I answer to no boss but myself. And that my friends, is priceless.

Thank you TraVerus - For giving me back my LIFE.

If you have any questions before making the decision to join TraVerus, I would be honored to help. Have a blessed week, pressed down, and running over with his grace.

Online Travel Agents- Timing Is Right For A Home Travel Business Career

The travel industry is a seven trillion dollar industry expected to double to fourteen trillion dollars within the next decade. This lucrative industry is currently growing 23% faster than the global economy.

A key factor in this growth phenomenon is the steady stream of baby boomers who are retiring, or getting ready to retire. In fact, baby boomers are retiring at a rate of one every eight seconds. Travel was rated the number one thing these baby boomers intend to do when they do retire.

There is now an increased demand for qualified travel agents, due to the explosive growth of the industry as a whole. To become a certified travel agent, your options are not limited to the traditional brick and mortar setting.

Many reputable travel agencies are now offering attractive options for the individual looking for a legitimate home based business.

If your goal is to work as an independent travel agent from the comfort of your own home, you may want to consider working as an online travel agent.

Here are some companies that you can research, that offer excellent income opportunities and complete training. Please note, that many travel companies that actively recruit agents to work from home, will hire their agents as employees.

There are also travel companies that recruit independent agents. This option will offer the agent the freedom of being self-employed, and the ability to set their own hours.

To take advantage of this option, be aware that there will be an investment required. The ability to make money will be solely at the discretion of the agent who chooses to invest in this business model.

On a positive note, many agents who have invested in this business model are making a very nice income, so be sure to research this option before ruling it out.

Travel companies that currently offer the independent agent business model include TraVerus Travel Network, Global Resorts Network, and Your Travel Business, also known as YTB.

Make sure to do your due diligence! Be sure to research each company carefully, and make it a priority to fully understand the compensation plan. You will also need to know what training is available, and whether the company will offer you the opportunity to become certified.

Don't be afraid to ask important questions, such as whether the company has IATA(International Air Transport Association), IATAN (International Airlines Travel Agent Network), and CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) Credentials. This is important information to know, especially if you intend to take advantage of the travel perks and benefits available to those in the travel industry.

Here are some questions to ask - What is the initial investment, if any? Are there any additional costs or fees associated with obtaining licensing, or becoming certified? And finally, if you are considering a work at home position, what kind of support and training is offered?

Next, determine whether you a right fit for the travel industry. Lets break down the qualifications that will determine whether you are suited for this challenging, but rewarding career.

Travel agents should have a minimum of a high school diploma. Agents should have a true love for travel,as well as a sincere enthusiasm and love for working with people, because these traits are crucial elements for success in this industry.

Travel agents should also possess excellent multi-tasking and organization skills. Attention to detail and accuracy are very important, along with great communication skills. In addition, good computer skills will be needed.

Travel agents should possess a professional, courteous demeanor when working with suppliers, and the general public. Sales ability and great interpersonal skills are an added plus.

The benefits of becoming a travel agent are many. I have listed the top three.

Travel agents save up to 80% on travel to many of the worlds exclusive resorts and destinations. These discounts include, but are not limited to:

a. Complimentary upgrades
b. Hotel room upgrades and discounts
c. Car rental discounts and upgrades
d. Cruises
e. Theme park discounts
f. Vacation Packages

FAM trips, also known as familiarization trips. Suppliers will offer access to their facilities at substantial discounts so that travel agents will have first hand knowledge of their facilities. The travel agent will then be able to make recommendations and book travel for their clients based on their personal knowledge and first hand experience.

The supplier will roll out the red carpet for the travel agent to ensure the travel professional has an outstanding time.

There are also tax benefits for individuals who chose to do this profession as an independent travel agent. You should consult with your CPA or tax professional for more information regarding this benefit.

So, how do I become a travel agent? In summary, becoming a travel agent can be a lucrative and rewarding career. Should you decide that you possess the skills and abilities needed for success, you can look forward to a promising career.

In addition to the companies named in this article, you can do further research online at Google or Yahoo using the following keywords - become a travel agent, how do I become a travel agent, travel agent careers, or online travel agent.

YTB vs Traverus: Why I Chose Traverus

One of the primary reasons that I chose to join TraVerus Travel Network

has to do with a call my sponsor had me listen to, by

David Manning, the CEO and President of TraVerus Travel Network.

On the call, something that Mr. Manning said really got to me.

He stated that there is no such thing as “job security”.

That really got under my skin.

I was a very successful advertising consultant in the yellow pages industry, and had consistently made over six figures a year. I still really loved the job, and loved the people who owned the small to medium sized businesses that I worked with.

I was just burned out from all of the juggling that had gone in the last 3 years that I was employed.

Bought, stripped down to nothing, downsized and sold. Bought, stripped down to nothing, downsized and sold.

For a while, I comforted myself in the knowledge that most companies will never touch the sales force when they are looking to down size, and our sales force was really, really good.

What I didn’t count on was the fact that we would be overloaded, overworked, and overwhelmed.

I watched our pension plan get sliced and diced and handed back to us, along with our back sides.

I watched, and quite simply, I mentally checked out.

How fun is a job, when you are making a heck of a lot of money, pulling more than your weight, still hitting quota after ridiculously high quota, but have no time for family, or for a life?

While money is very important, some things are NOT worth it
. I really began to question whether or not giving 30 years of my life, my youth and my health would be worth it, when “the company” was doing everything in it’s power to renege on it’s promises of benefits and pension after I retired. AND, to know that the benefits I worked so hard for could be left on the bargaining table (we were union) after I had given away my life, family time and God knows what else? I didn’t think so.

So, I walked away, and went into Real Estate. Wow, is all I can say. If you don’t know what happened to the Real Estate market and what is still happening in the Real Estate market, where have you been? (Smile)

Seriously, the market tanked. My prospects dried up. My finances were even drier. But, I was determined to succeed, and to never ever work for anyone else again.

Struggling to make a living in Real Estate, my principle broker and now my really good friend, showed me YTB. He had joined, and made a really good presentation. I saw the benefits, and I was really excited. But, it was $500 to join, and I had to discuss it with my husband, come up with the money, and do the research, my own due diligence prior to making that kind of commitment.

So, excited about the opportunity, I talked to my husband, who loved it, and we decided that we would join. As I was preparing to make the call to my principle broker, I quickly did a search on Google, and was pretty disturbed by what I read. YTB had lost their IATAN status, which is essentially required in order to book travel directly with vendors. I also found that several direct vendors had severed relationships with YTB.

I just didn’t want to risk money we really didn’t have to spare on promises and maybe’s, so I called my friend, and we politely declined. I mentioned the reasons why I didn’t want to join, and he stated that he understood.

My husband and I were really disappointed, after all, all of the benefits of starting a home travel business were still there. All of the reasons, the industry, the timing, the opportunity were right. We just didn’t feel comfortable investing with doubts.

Two months went by, and I struggled at Real Estate. I told myself that if I could make it in this market, I would really do well when it rebounded. About that time, my friend called, and wanted to talk to me about a travel opportunity he had recently gotten involved in. I shook my head, thinking, is he senile? We had already said no!

My husband called and said that he would be meeting us at the house that night. NOW, I was hopping mad! I seethed all the way home, and walked in, ready to tell my husband off, and there sat my friend Tim.

Quickly, I regained composure, sat down and we listened to David Manning’s call. Tim shared with us that he had had no success with YTB, and that once he had found TraVerus, had quickly recovered his initial investment. The most he had ever been able to recruit into YTB was 11 people, and today, he sits with well over 100 people, in 3 months! Right then and there, I knew that this was right, that TraVerus was the opportunity we had been looking for and without thought of cost or due diligence, we joined TraVerus.

When I say we, I signed up, AND my husband signed up.

It has only been three months, and I have loved every minute of it
. I no longer practice Real Estate, and that is fine by me! I make more money with TraVerus than I ever made in Real Estate, and I’m quickly gaining on the six figure income I left behind.

If you are considering a home travel business, please be sure to do your due diligence before joining.

Sometimes being at the wrong place, at the right time can be a good thing. I know, I’m living proof.
